Peak Design’s supply chain is made up of hundreds of factories and thousands of workers, making it one of the most challenging and consequential pieces of our company’s environmental and social impact. 

Fair Trade

Despite inherent challenges, 2023 had some exciting wins. One notable achievement worthy of celebration is the Fair Trade certification of our new Philippines factory - AJ Solutions Philippines. The factory is the first Fair Trade certified facility in the country. As a Fair Trade factory, it meets high verified social and environmental standards and Peak Design pays workers a premium for the product they produce. All of our bags are sourced from Fair Trade Certified factories.

At The Expense Of Nobody

The second point of Peak Design's six-point mission statement, nestled right behind "make the best things," is "succeed at the expense of nobody." The recent certification of Peak Design's soft goods manufacturing facilities as Fair Trade Certified is a massive achievement in following through on that mission point.

Supply Chain Initiatives

We’ve improved working conditions and environmental standards in our Tier 1 facilities but have made little progress further up our supply chain. As a medium-sized business, we have little leverage with our Tier 2-4 suppliers on social and environmental performance. Looking ahead, we’re focused on strengthening relationships with our Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, and working collaboratively with other brands to leverage necessary changes. 

Given the importance and magnitude of this work, we’ve hired a new dedicated supply chain sustainability manager. In addition to overseeing our general environmental and social supply chain initiatives, he will also spearhead our Scope 3 decarbonization efforts. 

We are also working with the Outdoor Industry Association through their Climate Action Corp CoLabs. OIA facilitates collaboration between brands working to address common challenges. Peak Design is currently participating in a CoLab focused on sourcing low-impact aluminum.
